Windows 7 End of Life - Windows 10 Upgrade
Project Overview
After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for computers running Windows 7. This means that all UA computers will need to be running Windows 10 to keep our network secure. OIT will start the transition to Windows 10 as soon as possible, with the goal of completion by Thanksgiving 2019; for a complete time frame, please see Implementation Timeframe below. Implementation Timeframe
Monday, July 1, 2019 Marks the beginning of the in-place, self-service upgrade timeframe. Customers are able to pick the time that is most convenient for them to initiate the upgrade to Windows 10 released via Software Center. Customers are encouraged to upgrade their systems to Windows 10 at their earliest convenience.
Wednesday, July 31, 2019 PR materials released via digital signage, UAF Cornerstone, UAF Grapevine, OIT website, etc.
Wednesday, November 27, 2019 This is the end of the self-service opt-in upgrade timeframe. On November 27, the automated update to Windows 10 will be applied to computers running Windows 7. After the upgrade, users will be prompted to login as usual.
Ongoing OIT will find and address computers with Windows 10 compatibility issues.
Tuesday, January 14, 2020 Microsoft ceases all Windows 7 support. By this time, all Windows 7 computers will have been upgraded to Windows 10 or otherwise identified by OIT for assistance.
